Guru Granth Sahib is the Holy Scripture of the Sikhs.
The tenth Sikh Guru Gobind Singh ordered all Sikhs to follow the writings in Guru Granth Sahib as the final and eternal Guru.
It has status of a living Guru. The scripture is referred to as Saroop (blessed face) instead of a ‘book’ or Scripture to signify its status as a living being. Its pages are referred to as ang (limbs). It is handled with reverence. Old Guru Granth Sahib’s are cremated with the same rituals as death of a person.
It was compiled by the Sikh Gurus themselves. It was not compiled later on after Sikh Guru’s demise. It is not based on oral traditions of knowledge passed on and diluted over generations. It retains the exact words written by the Sikh Gurus themselves.
All Guru Granth Sahib all over the world are identical. There are 1430 angs (literally 'limbs', pages).
It is written in Gurmukhi script. It has its own unique language along with Persian and Punjabi words.
Online copies of Guru Granth Sahib are available. (Guru Granth Sahib, Internet Archive, 2023) There also are translations into several languages with explanation in Punjabi, English, and other languages. (Sikh Samridhi, 2025) and (Guru Granth Sahib, 2025)
Physical copy of Guru Granth Sahib can be requested using a formal process which involves having a home for it in the Gurdwara as well as presence of Sikhs who understand the protocols around it to handle it with reverence.
Presence of Guru Granth Sahib is said to bring prakash (light) in the Gurdwara. This signifies presence of knowledge and the Guru which drives away darkness of ignorance and evil.
It has teachings on every aspect of life. It is a spiritual as well as temporal (worldly) authority for the Sikhs.
